Hariyali Teej is one of the several festivities that take place during the auspicious month of Saawan. Teej this year will take place on July 31. The festival is widely celebrated by women in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand.

Hariyali Teej is also called as Sawan Teej in some areas because it occurs during the monsoon season. The season when farmers across India sow their crops is known as ‘Hariyali,’ or greenery. Hariyali Teej falls on Shukla Paksha Tritiya in Shravana month, which is a sacred month dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and is marked by different fasts. Hartalika Teej, Hariyali Teej, and Kajari Teej are three forms of popular teej. All of these festivals take place throughout the Shravan and Bhadrapada months.

During Hariyali Teej, the ritual of applying henna to the hands and feet is especially important. Without performing this ritual of Shringar, Teej festival is incomplete. It is a common idea that the colour of Mehendi on the hands indicates how much love a husband has lavished on his wife. The darker the henna colour on her palm, the more her fiancé or husband will adore her.

Wedded Hindu ladies fast for a day and pray to God Shiva and Goddess Parvati for a good married life on this auspicious day.Hariyali Teej requires new outfits, colourful bangles, mehendi, singing, jhulas (swings), and, of course, food. Married ladies also go to their parents’ house on this day, dressed in new attire, preferably a green saree with bangles and other jewellery. Swings are also decorated with flowers and other materials as part of the day’s celebrations. Women who keep this pace swing about on the swings and sing Teej melodies. Sindhara, a bucket of presents, is sent to the wedded daughter’s house as part of the day’s ceremonial. It’s full of gifts for her and her in-laws.
