Jaisalmer, often known as “The Golden City,” is a city in Rajasthan, India, approximately 575 kilometres (357 miles) west of Jaipur, the state capital. The city is capped by the old Jaisalmer Fort, which rises on a hill of yellowish sandstone. A royal residence and several exquisite Jain temples can be found within this fort. Many of the fort’s and city’s residences and temples are made of intricately carved sandstone. The city, which includes occupants of the fort, is located in the centre of the Thar Desert (the great Indian desert) and has a population of roughly 78,000 people. It is the administrative centre of the district of Jaisalmer. The city was originally the state capital of Rajasthan.
The most incredible aspect of this fort is that it is a functioning urban centre. Around 3000 people live within the fort’s walls. It is elegantly interlaced in little winding lanes, dotted with residences and temples. This fort is the epitome of the cultural mix of nomadic desert nomads and aristocracy.
